Home for the aged is a general term for a facility that cares for elderly people.  It is not a question of where but a question of how.  How is home for the aged can do good for our elderly?

In a fast phase world like ours, finding time for fun and leisure is hard and finding time for family is harder.  Sometimes we are left with no choice.  We are forced to leave our elderly family members in a nursing home or more popular as home for the aged.

There is always two sides in a story, leaving elderly family member in a caring home has advantages and disadvantages.  Number of senior citizens suddenly seemed to multiply since 1950’s.  In 1900 the average life expectancy was forty-five, by 1950 the average life span was almost seventy years; the population has doubled but the number of people65 and over had quadrupled to become 8% of the total.  In 1950’s more and more population of “retirees” are supposed to get their pensions.  Due to this case, extended families are seemed to be an obligation, where elderly had to stay with their sons, daughters or grandchildren.

People then began wondering how to accommodate this burden.  They started taking about nursing homes, retirement houses, or apartments where they can leave their elderly.  Golden years are supposed to have a positive connotation but now the phrase developed into a different meaning.  Instead of the “golden years” being now, I a one’s old age golden refers to the good old days.

Studies showed that people in developed countries are not only living longer, but also remain healthy for much of their lives, unlike in less developed countries, where the elderly tend to be plagued with serious illnesses.  Causing them to live longer which means government has to support them because they are already retirees.  In order to support them, one must work and working means no one to take care of the elderly.

Elderly has a special healthcare although facilities like home for the aged are designed to take care of them they are often lacking human resources and other needs of these retirees.  A sad truth is some facilities have no mercy on their patients.  Sometimes they overmedicate them and let them lay in their beds for hours and even days.  They lack people to attend to the elderly so they had to choose over feeding them and bathing them.  They feed them and who knows how and what, and then they will let them stay in soiled clothes and beds.  Those were just samples.  But not every home is like that, there are homes where they will take care of the elderly and makes sure that they are well feed and well medicated.

If you are thinking of taking your elderly family member to homes, you must weigh things and consider possibilities and other options first.  Sometimes it will work for you and your dad for example but sometimes it is better if you’d get help and pay assistance from private nurses.   Whatever your decision is, you must remember that they once took care of us and had been very patient to us when we were younger; it is time to pay them back.  Your son or daughter will do the same for you in the future.

Spain Borrowing Costs Ease, Catalonia Unhappy

Springhill Care Group - Spain’s borrowing costs on its 10-year government bonds fell to the lowest level since January on Thursday.

At its latest debt auction raised 4.8 billion euros and saw strong demand from investors for the bonds maturing in three and 10 years’ time.

Madrid has been able to more easily sell its bonds at lower rates of interest since the European Central Bank announced its bond-buying plan.

Trader Ignacio Blanco with Bankinter said: “Over the last month and a half bond interest rates are down more than two percent, since Draghi spoke at the end of July. There was strong demand in the days before the auction and today too. They were buying bonds before, they continued to buy today, and the initial operations after the auction were good.”

Many analysts have warned Spain’s borrowing costs could skyrocket to unsustainable levels unless Rajoy asks for an international bailout, at which point the ECB would start buying Spanish bonds.

The country’s economic crisis is exposing deep fault lines with the wealthy, but heavily indebted, region of Catalonia calling for tax breaks.

Catalonia, which is in northeastern Spain, generates one fifth of the country’s economic output and is home to 16 percent of Spaniards.

More than half of Catalans say they want a separate state, and hundreds of thousands marched in Barcelona last week – the biggest such show of separatist fervor.

The upsurge in Catalan separatism is founded on a conviction that Madrid is draining the region financially.

The central government collects most taxation payments then redistributes them to Spain’s 17 self-governing regions, which run their own schools and hospitals. Each year Catalans say they pay 16 billion euros more in taxes than the regional government spends.

The region’s debts have made the Madrid government’s task of balancing the budget more difficult.

Rajoy has threatened to intervene in regions that cannot control their budgets. Catalonia is likely to miss its deficit target this year and has had to ask Madrid for a five billion euro bailout to meet its debt redemptions.

Obama seeks to widen support base with Florida seniors, Hispanics

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Kicking off a two-day Sunshine State barnstorm Saturday, President Barack Obama tapped into key parts of what he hopes will be a winning Florida coalition similar to but larger than the one he assembled in 2008.

At stops in Seminole and Kissimmee, Fla., the president, who won the Sunshine State by just 50.9 percent in 2008, targeted the votes of senior citizens, warning that their Medicare benefits would be harmed by a plan put forward by his Republican opponents Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.
“I want you to know, AARP, I would never turn Medicare into a voucher,” Obama said at a civic center here, making an explicit play for members of the 50-and-up club. “I believe no American should ever have to spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies.”

Obama lost Florida seniors to John McCain in 2008 but is seeking to do better with them this time around, focusing mainly on appealing to their support of federal entitlements. They’re a lucrative demographic in Florida, having made up 22 percent of the total vote in 2008.

Vice President Joe Biden also brought the “Medicare good, Republicans bad” message to Zanesville, Ohio, where he told a crowd there that Romney and Ryan are “not actually preserving Medicare. They’re for a whole new plan, ‘vouchercare.’"

The Romney campaign pushed back on Biden’s attack on Medicare, saying in a statement that Biden “knowingly and deliberately leveled false and discredited attacks.”
                              

Besides seniors, the president also tailored his pitch Saturday to Hispanic voters, who tended to lean Republican in Florida before 57 percent of them voted for Obama in 2008. Introducing him in Kissimmee was Viviana Margarita Janer, a woman who was born in Puerto Rico but has lived in the United States since she was 6 months old.

Janer urged the audience of 3,000 to register to vote, noting that the website gotta register.com, which Obama frequently hawks on the stump, is also available in Spanish.

“When you put the ‘I voted’ sticker on, you’re going to feel great pride knowing that you gave this man, this great leader, four more years to finish what he started,” she said.

And earlier in Seminole, Obama praised Hispanic voters as part of the patchwork that gave him a win in Florida in 2008.

“I look out on this crowd, I am reminded you were the change,” he said to a crowd of 10,000 at the Seminole campus of St. Petersburg College, noting “folks… from every walk of life -- black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, young, old, gay, straight, abled, disabled,” he said.
The president blazed through friendly territory throughout Saturday, first in Pinellas County, home to Seminole, where he won 54 percent of the vote in 2008. And Osceola County, where Kissimmee is, gave him 60 percent of the vote.

Kissimmee has special resonance for the Obama campaign given Bill Clinton’s post-convention status as Obama has been putting it “Secretary of Explaining Stuff:” Kissimmee was the first place the two campaigned together after Obama bested Clinton’s wife, Hillary, in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

During that Oct. 30 speech, Clinton, perhaps still a bit raw from the bruising primary his wife endured, praised Obama as a good decision-maker in part because he had the good sense to consult the Clintons during the financial crisis.

“He talked to his advisers — he talked to my economic advisers, he called Hillary. He called me,” Clinton said. “You know why? Because he knew it was complicated and before he said anything, he wanted to understand,” Clinton said, four years before he would get a bear hug from the now-president after delivering one of the strongest defenses ever of the latter’s policies.

 MOBILE, Alabama — Drury Lane in Country Club Estates has the look and feel of a country lane: secluded, narrow — less than two lanes wide — and heavily-wooded, with well-kept homes appearing as if by magic among the trees.

 Yet some of its 17 homes, including corner lots at Wimbledon Drive to the south and Hillwood Road to the north, are within a short iron shot of the Country Club of Mobile north nine golf course and about two blocks from the main club buildings themselves. Residents of Drury Lane, from near and far, had high praise for the Spring Hill area and their neighbors. “We love it here. Absolutely love it. Drury Lane is a wonderful street. The best street in Mobile, I believe,” said resident Lee Robinson, a Mobile native, who grew up 300 yards away on Wimbledon Drive, where his parents, Lee and Helen Robinson, still live.

 The Robinsons’ home is one of the through lots on the street, with a front entrance on Hillwood Road and a back entrance on Drury Lane. The family prefers the backyard for activities and neighboring, said Robinson. “The neighbors have been fabulous and a huge blessing,” said his wife, Aimee, also a Mobile native. “The minute you have a storm, everyone here comes together.” The Robinsons and their three daughters had just moved in shortly before Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, but were invited to stay the night with neighbors, who had 14 people in their home, to share their generator power, she said. Robinson discovered both Mobile and family tradition in the vintage 1937 home on the lane when he thoroughly renovated it in 2007-08. The home had original hardwood floors, a double coincidence, because Robinson is president of Overseas Hardwoods Co., and his grandfather was in the hardwood flooring business with the family-owned Mobile River Sawmill in Mount Vernon, Robinson said. Mobile River Sawmill first made hardwood flooring in the early 1930s — the mill was sold to Scott Paper Co. in 1963. The flooring was used in homes all over Mobile and could be identified beginning in 1937 by “MRS” and the grade of the flooring indented on the back of every strip of flooring, Robinson said. Every piece of flooring taken up during the 2007-08 renovation bore the “MRS” insignia. Robinson left some of the original flooring upstairs and replaced the 1937 flooring downstairs with fresh 2007-08 hardwood from his own hardwoods company. “We have flooring from our family, commemorating a century in the lumber business, from past and present, in the home,” said Robinson, who is also a branch director on the board of the New Orleans branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. “I like this location better than where we were before. I am closer to my friends. The swimming pool is right up the street. I hope we stay here all the way through school,” said daughter Annah Robinson, 12, who attends St. Ignatius Catholic School. ‘Very nice folks’ West Coast natives Walt and Marcia Hayes, of Washington and California, respectively, found their way to Drury Lane through transfers during Walt’s career with Scott Paper Co. Their travels took them from Everett, Wash., through Philadelphia to Mobile 38 years ago. After six months in Mobile, the family decided to stay, because people were receptive to the newcomers and the church-oriented community seemed a good place to raise a son and two daughters, said Hayes, a decorated combat Army infantry lieutenant from the Korean War. The Hayeses have been active since that time at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Spring Hill. Their younger daughter, Donna Mackin, a St. Paul’s Episcopal School graduate as were her sister and brother, now teaches sixth grade at her alma mater. The Hayeses became active in civic groups, the Country Club of Mobileand Mardi Gras societies over the years, said Walt Hayes, who retired in 1989 as Southern regional logistics manager at the paper company. They lived in the Llanfair subdivision until 1997, when Marcia Hayes discovered Drury Lane while walking near the Country Club. The couple bought an old house built in 1946. After renting out the house for a time, they tore it down and built a new one. “One of my accomplishments in life was being the contractor/builder for our present 3,200-square-foot home, with four bedrooms and an enclosed patio pool,” Hayes said. “Drury Lane is a pleasant neighborhood with very nice folks from a variety of backgrounds,” he said. The wide range of professions include academic, medical, real estate, investment, banking, law, international sales and, a retired chief executive officer. A few still have children below college age. The Hayeses enjoy “a nice extended backyard” with the venerable oak trees just beyond their property on the Country Club of Mobile golf course. Hayes, an avid golfer, can step out his back door and be on the North Nine short golf course at the club’s 27-hole layout. The trend on Drury Lane over the years has been for residents to improve their properties dramatically. “The houses on this street have changed since we have been here. Most have been torn down, refurbished or rebuilt. The new houses built are nicer and nicer,” Hayes said. In some cases, large lots have been subdivided when original homes were razed, Marcia Hayes said. She is an 11-year member of the Wimbledon Garden Club, in existence for 53 years, which includes members from around Country Club Estates. “Most of our projects are within the neighborhood, but we are a philanthropic organization and do outreach programs,” she said. The club maintains landscaped entrances to Country Club Estates, upgrades street signs and encourages home beautification. Drury Lane neighbor Aimee Robinson is the garden club president. Some residents are also active in the Country Club Estates Neighborhood Association, said Susan Carley, from another section of CCE and founder of the association five years ago. The neighborhood maps shows the boundaries of the neighborhood as Old Shell and Bit & Spur roads on the north; Airport Boulevard on the south; part of McGregor Avenue on the east; and approximately the northern boundary of E.R. Dickson Elementary school on the west, according to association website http://ccena.org/. ‘Location, location, location’ “Drury Lane is one of the favorite streets in Country Club Estates. Unless you knew to look for the street you’d never know it was there. Pretty, well-kept homes full of nice people. It’s a wonderful stretch of homes,” said Cam Marston, current president of the Country Club Estates Neighborhood Association and a resident of the larger neighborhood. Dr. Alan Franklin, a retina specialist, bought a home on Drury Lane 61/2 years ago when he moved his practice and his family from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Mobile. He is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio “I really enjoy living down here. Being from the Midwest, I don’t miss winters. The people are friendly and the cost of living is good,” Franklin said. “We love being in the Country Club setting and yet off on a side street.” “Location, location, location brought us to Drury Lane,” said his wife, Susan, who deals in real estate part time. It is a central location with close proximity to schools and activities for their four children, ranging in age from 12 to 4. The Franklins also have a backyard bordering the golf course with its two small lakes in the center of the course. “It’s like having your own private park right out behind your house,” Susan Franklin said. “Fortunately, the Country Club is flexible and doesn’t mind having the kids catch bass and tadpoles on the lakes.” “I love living on the golf course so I can go out and play with my dogs. Also, I like to walk with my friends,” said their daughter, Isabel, a seventh-grader at St. Paul’s Episcopal. Typical of the upgrading trend on Drury Lane, the Franklins, who are outgrowing their present home, hope to tear it down one day and rebuild, Susan Franklin said. A special feature of Drury Lane from a real estate standpoint is that it “is one of the least-traveled streets in Country Club Estates and retains the feeling of a true lane,” said Melissa Morrissette, co-owner of LLB&B Inc. Real Estate, which lists properties in the area.

As will I, but my vote will be for President Obama ("A defining gap: Seniors for Romney, Millennials for Obama")

 I believe that our major concern should be educating our young. It is unbelievably arrogant for seniors like me to worry about only our welfare, finances and health. We had our day in the sun.
The future generation is being short-changed by cuts in education spending and the increasing cost of higher education. We are witnessing the dumbing-down of America.

There is also so much misinformation floating around about the Affordable Care Act and so much we mere citizens do not understand. Many rely on radio or TV talk-show hosts to teach us, and unfortunately, the hosts "teach" their opinions. Perhaps we should still think for ourselves.

Older voters remember There is a different sense of history that divides Millennials and those 65 and older. Older voters remember the Cuban missile crisis, the Cold War and the hot Korean War and Vietnam conflict.

Seniors served and sacrificed in Korea and Vietnam to defend the free world against communism. They have seen what communism wrought in Eastern Europe and Asia. This brave generation will vote in droves for Mitt Romney to prevent President Obama from transforming a free America into a socialist or communist one.

Ironically, most of these senior citizens depend heavily on Social Security and Medicare for survival.  GOP plan causes concerns While I am 65 years old, I do not support Mitt Romney or any Republican. ("The underlying duel of 2012 Seniors vs. Millennials"). It is surprising to me that any senior thinks otherwise, given Rep. Paul Ryan's proposed budget that would mean deep spending cuts.

Also, while President Obama might want to keep lower college loan interest rates, the task is ultimately that of Congress. Finally, if Republican volunteer Beverly Rubin, 62, does not want socialized medicine, then I expect her to not participate in Medicare once she turns 65.

The decision of US to let the blind human rights activist Chen Guangcheng return into China’s fold following his escape from authorities is straining ties between the two countries as diplomatic dialogues opened in Beijing.

The 40-year old Chen who is now considered a dissident became an international human rights inspiration to many Chinese after earning the ire of the local government for exposing forced abortions in line with the country’s one-child policy. The self-taught lawyer took to the US embassy after his escape, apparently to ask for help but was eventually ushered into the Beijing Hospital.

According to a senior official’s statement to Springhill Care Group, Chen has indeed went into the embassy that day and has requested for medical treatment for his injured foot. American medical personnel have then conducted medical tests and made appropriate treatment during the time he was there.

Immediately after the incident, the Chinese government has expressed its disapproval about the entire affair, demanding an apology from the US for taking Chen in.

“What the U.S. side should do now is neither to continue misleading the public and making every excuse to shift responsibility and conceal its wrongdoing, nor to interfere in the domestic affairs of China,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin.

This incident came just when the US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton is visiting Beijing in a meeting with Chinese officials on security and trade talks. And although no one mentioned Chen’s name, it is evident in their statements that the incident is on the spotlight as the 2 nations struggle to maintain common ground.
Clinton said in her opening statement, “The United States believes that no state can legitimately deny the universal rights that belong to every human being – or punish those who exercise them. A China that protects the rights of all its citizens will be a stronger, more prosperous partner for the United States.”

Dai Bingguo issued a rebuttal on behalf of China, saying, “I wish to point out in particular the fundamental way to manage state-to-state relations is to abide by the basic norms of international relations, namely to respect China’s sovereignty, core interests and choice of social system.”

Meanwhile, Chinese President Hu Jintao made his point known in his opening speech during the 4th round of US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogues. He remarked that US and China should know how to respect each other despite their disagreements and also appealed to its counterpart to break the conventional belief that superpowers are bound to engage in conflicts.

London 2012 Olympics: badminton eight from China, Indonesia and South Korea expelled

TELEGRAPH UK - Four pairs in the women’s doubles were disqualified from the Olympics for underperforming in the final group stages on Tuesday night as they deliberately tried to lose by spraying shots wide or into the net to secure an easier quarter-final draw. The players, the Chinese world champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, Greysia Poli and Meiliana Jauhari of Indonesia and two South Korean pairs, Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na, and Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min Jung, were jeered by the crowd. The organising committee for the Games will not be offering refunds to spectators who attended on Tuesday evening, despite Lord Coe describing the incident as “depressing” and asking: “Who wants to sit through something like that?” Officials from the sport’s governing body conducted a frantic round of meetings as they hastily arranged a disciplinary panel. An official announcement of its findings was only made public as spectators took their seats for last night’s women’s doubles quarter-finals. Pairs from Canada, South Africa, Russia and Australia, who had thought their Olympics were over, had to hastily prepare for a return to court in front of a sell-out crowd. “We found out we were playing at 3 o’clock,” said Michelle Edwards, of South Africa. “Everything was so last minute. We packed our bags, rush, rush, rush and here we are. The mental preparation was almost zero.” South Africa lost 2-0 to Russia but Australia took Canada to three sets before losing. The episode was deeply embarrassing for the badminton authorities who would have been aware that Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, recently described match fixing as the biggest threat to the Games. With all athletes and coaches swearing to uphold the Olympic oath at the opening ceremony, this damaged the integrity of the Games. The stakes were high for the badminton authorities with the prospect of two sports being removed from the Olympics before Rio 2016. “We are very sorry this has happened,” said Thomas Lund, the chief operating officer of the badminton federation. “The most important thing is we dealt with the issue and did it in the best interests of the other players in this tournament.” But while the administrators were lauding their disciplinary process the players were firmly pointing the finger at the sport’s authorities. The Daily Telegraph reported earlier this year they had been warned of manipulation when they changed the early stage of the Olympic competition to a round robin stage. China has been accused of manipulating matches before but only ties involving two sets of their own players. This was more serious because it took place against a Korean pair. “I have had volunteers really upset — they were crying because they couldn’t believe this was going on the Olympic Games,” said Gail Emms, the former British player who won silver in Athens. “They have been working so hard to make this competition perfect and they have just seen four women’s doubles pairs not live up to what they believe in. There have been a lot of strong words.” There was sympathy but also condemnation for the Chinese pair from their own countrymen. Lin Dan, the defending men’s singles Olympic champion, admitted Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang had discredited the sport. “I think this is not in the Olympic spirit,” he said. “To avoid this situation is very simple: just straight knock out.” The scandal began when the Chinese top seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang started to show little interest in beating the Koreans to finish top of Group A. The 40-year old Chen who is now considered a dissident became an international human rights inspiration to many Chinese after earning the ire of the local government for exposing forced abortions in line with the country’s one-child policy. The self-taught lawyer took to the US embassy after his escape, apparently to ask for help but was eventually ushered into the Beijing Hospital.

According to a senior official’s statement to Springhill Care Group, Chen has indeed went into the embassy that day and has requested for medical treatment for his injured foot. American medical personnel have then conducted medical tests and made appropriate treatment during the time he was there.

Immediately after the incident, the Chinese government has expressed its disapproval about the entire affair, demanding an apology from the US for taking Chen in.

“What the U.S. side should do now is neither to continue misleading the public and making every excuse to shift responsibility and conceal its wrongdoing, nor to interfere in the domestic affairs of China,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin.

This incident came just when the US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton is visiting Beijing in a meeting with Chinese officials on security and trade talks. And although no one mentioned Chen’s name, it is evident in their statements that the incident is on the spotlight as the 2 nations struggle to maintain common ground.

Clinton said in her opening statement, “The United States believes that no state can legitimately deny the universal rights that belong to every human being – or punish those who exercise them. A China that protects the rights of all its citizens will be a stronger, more prosperous partner for the United States.”

Dai Bingguo issued a rebuttal on behalf of China, saying, “I wish to point out in particular the fundamental way to manage state-to-state relations is to abide by the basic norms of international relations, namely to respect China’s sovereignty, core interests and choice of social system.”

Meanwhile, Chinese President Hu Jintao made his point known in his opening speech during the 4th round of US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogues. He remarked that US and China should know how to respect each other despite their disagreements and also appealed to its counterpart to break the conventional belief that superpowers are bound to engage in conflicts.

“Given our different national conditions, it is impossible for both China and the United States to see eye to eye on every issue. We should properly manage the differences by improving mutual understanding so these differences will not undermine the larger interests of China-U.S. relations,” said Hu.

UN Sanctions 3 North Korean Firms

United Nation’s Security Council has decided to freeze the assets of 3 North Korean companies and consequently ban them from global trade because of their involvement in exporting, procuring and financing nuclear-related weapons.

UN’s sanctions committee has named the 3 blacklisted firms as Korea Heungjin Trading Company, Amroggang Development Banking Corporation and Green Pine Conglomerate.

Amroggang is a financing company involved in ballistic missile sales and is related to Tanchon Commercial Bank, which was blacklisted in 2009 for its participation in selling of arms. Green Pine is the firm which took over most of the activities of the Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation, North Korea’s primary arms dealer that was blacklisted in 2009. It manufactures military maritime crafts, missile systems, torpedoes and also provides technical assistance to defense firms. Meanwhile, Korea Heungjin Trading Company was utilized to manufacture equipment with missile design applications and had been used for trading by the Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation.

The Security Council committee has also approved more technology and items that would be banned for transfer from and to North Korea, adding to its list that contains North Korea’s nuclear-related resources.

Originally, South Korea, Japan, US and the European Union proposed to Security Council’s committee a list of 40 North Korean firms they wanted to sanction but China blocked the deal, resulting in only the approval of 3 companies. China usually opposes economic sanctions and is an ally of North Korea, though it had previously approved sanctions against the latter in its 2009 nuclear test.

A former head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party and a former member of Egypt’s parliament won against Hosni Mubarak’s Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik by a 4% margin.
